Forebrain/Diencephalon Flashcards
The diencephalon can be divisible how?
The diencephalon is grossly divisible into the hypothalamus, situated ventrally, and the thalamus, lying more dorsally.
What are Brodmann areas 1-3 functionally set apart for?
Brodmann Areas Areas 1-3 (primary sensory), 4 (primary motor), 17 (primary visual), and 41 (primary auditory). Some of these are associated with named gyri that you should know.
What are Brodmann Areas 4 set apart for
Brodmann Areas Areas 1-3 (primary sensory), 4 (primary motor), 17 (primary visual), and 41 (primary auditory). Some of these are associated with named gyri that you should know.
What function is associated with Brodmann Area 17
Brodmann Areas Areas 1-3 (primary sensory), 4 (primary motor), 17 (primary visual), and 41 (primary auditory). Some of these are associated with named gyri that you should know.
What nuclei in the thalamus are we supposed to know?
- anterior, dorsomedial,
- centromedial,
- pulvinar (you do not need to know its separate parts),
- lateral and medial geniculate nuclei,
- VA-VL, and
- VPL-VPM.
The DM thalamus projects information where?
Frontal association cortex
The anterior nucleus of the thalamus projects where?
cingulate gyrus
The VA/VL thalamus projects where?
motor cortex
*receives info from globus pallidus and cerebellum (dentate)
The VPM and VPL thalamus receive what information and project that info where?
- receive from medial lemniscus, spinothalamic tract (and the trigeminal equivalent)
- project to somato-sensory cortex
The LGN receives what information?
LGN - lateral geniculate nucleus
- recieves and projects visual information
- from optic tract, to visual cortex
The MGN projects what information
- receives info from the inferior brachium (auditory information)
- projects to auditory cortex
The pulvinar thalamus projects where?
parieto-occipital association cortex
the internal capsule runs through what diencephalic structures?
Anteriorly, the internal capsule lies between the caudate nucleus and the lentiform nucleus; posteriorly, it lies between the thalamus and lentiform nucleus
The anterior region of the internal capsule carries what information?
FROM - Anterior nucleus of thalamus
DM nucleus
TO - Cingulate gyrus
Prefrontal cortex
The posterior region of the internal capsule carries what information where?
FROM - motor cortex
TO - Spinal cord and brainstem
Postcentral gyrus
