Forces in balance Flashcards
what is a scalar quantity
measure of magnitude (size) not direction
what is a vector quantity
magnitude and direction
what is displacement
the distance ina given direction, like a straight line
examples of vectors
weight
force
accreleration
grav field strength
displacement
examples of scalars
speed
distance
time
mass
how are vectors represented
arrows which are longer based on magnitude and show direction by direction
whta is a force
measured in N
its a vector force
a push or pull acting on an object from an interaction with another object
what is a contact force and examples
when two objects touch eg air resistence tension and normal contact
whats a non contact force and examples
when theres no contact like grav pot and a field of attracrion
what is newtons third law of motion
when two objects interact they except an equal and opiosite force
whats a resultant force
a single force that basically sums up all the forces acting on an object
if the resultant force is balanced
the object stays at rest or is at a steady speed, the forces are baalnced
how to find resultant force
take away the smaller oposing force from the larger one
whats newtons first law
if a force is acting on an object is balanced with its oposite one, the resultant force is zero
what is a center pf mass and how to find it
a center of mass is the mdpoint where the forces act
it center of mass is in the center of the axis of symmetry
