electricity in the home Flashcards
what is alternating current
voltage constantly changes back and forth, 50hz per sec and up to 230 v
what is direct current
charge always flows one way
what material are wires
copper as it conducts
what does a main circuit always have
a neutral and a live wire
what are step up tranformers
they transport energy from power stations to homes but need to decrease the current as current makes a high resistence and hence heat- wasted energy
so you hugely increase thw PD which decreases the current and the resistence
what are step down trasnformers
move down the pd and up the charge which lowers the resistence to be supplied to homes
what are plug cases made of and why
plastic because its a good insulator of electricity
what is earth wire and functions
stripy green, it has a neutral charge of 0v unless there is a fault in which it carries out any dangerous electrical energy
what is live wire and stuff
brown wire produced the ac into the home at height of 230v
what is the neuteal wire
blue
carries away any excess current
what does the fuse do
it will melt and cut the live wire off if there is too much charge
what material is useed for wall socket pins
brass because it conducts and doesnt rust and is harder
what does a short circuit do
when a live wire and neutral wire touch a huge current pass between, a fuse should blow and cut them off
power potential dif equation
P = I x V
power resesitence equation
P = I2 x R
