forces and motion Flashcards
what is the time taken for a driver to react called?
thinking time
what is thinking distance?
is the distance travelled between a driver seeing a danger and taking action to avoid it, such as putting their foot on the brake pedal to stop the car
what is braking distance?
the distance travelled before a car comes to a stop after the brakes have been applied. Breaking distance increases as the speed of the car increases
what will cause thinking time and thinking distance to increase?
if your tired
alcohol or drugs
distracted or lack concentration
what does an increase in thinking distance mean?
larger risk of accident
what will cause braking distance to increase?
the road is icy or wet
the car has poor brakes or bald tyres
grater speed of a car
what precautions have to be taken in driving?
keep an appropriate distance from the car in front
have different speed limits for different types of road
slow when conditions are poor
the greater the mass of a vehicle…
the greater its breaking distance
the greater the speed of a vehicle…
the greater its breaking distance
how does a car brake?
a disc rotates between two brake pads
when the brakes are applied the pads are pushed against the disc. This creates a larger force which slows the car down
what causes slipping on roads?
worn tyres
