Forces and motion Flashcards
speed formula
speed=distance/time
how to calculate speed from a distance-time graph
distance/time
contact forces =
-Tension
-Muscles
-Friction
-Wind and waves
Non-contact forces
-Gravity
-Magnetism
-Electric forces
Newtons 3rd law of motion
for every force, there is an equal opposite force
velocity
a speed and a direction
acceleration
Any process where the velocity changes.
how do you calculate acceleration
change in speed (in m/s)/time taken (in s)
What is force measure in?
Newtons (N)
What is weight? and what is it measure in?
How much force is exerted on an object by gravity
Measure in N
How do you calculate weight?
mass x gravity
Newtons first law of motion
An object will remain at rest or continue to move constant speed as long as the force acting on it are balanced
Newtons 2nd law of motion
Force will make an object accelerate. The stronger the force, the greater the acceleration. The higher the mass of an object, the more force is needed to accelerate it.
how to calculate force (N)
mass (kg) x acceleration (ms-2)
What is energy?
-Required to make things move or change
-Not a substance, but is in everything
-Cannot be made or destroyed
- Measured in joules + kilojoules (kj)
