Forces and elasticity Flashcards
What is energy?
energy is the property that must be transferred to an object in order to perform work on, or to heat, the object.
What is meant by a material with elastic properties?
If when a force is applied, the object stretches or compresses, then returns to its natural shape as soon as the force is removed.
What is meant by a material with plastic properties?
If when a force is applied, the object stretches or compresses then remains the same even after the fore has been removed.
What law do we use when dealing with the stretching or springs or wires?
HOOKES LAW
What is the equation for hookes law?
Spring constant = force/extension
What equipment is needed when proving Hookes law?
A meter ruler, a clamp and stand and a spring, and a weight.
How do you carry out the experiment?
Attach the spring to the clamp and measure the original length, then after this add a weight and measure the extension. Keep doing this and add more weight each time.
What does the graph showing spring extension show?
A directly proportional set of results, UNTIL the spring reaches its elastic limit where it cannot stretch any more or revert to its original shape.
