Electricty In The Home Flashcards
What is current doing in Ac supplies?
Constantly changing direction.
What is the Uk mains supply around?
230V
what is direct current?
Current that always flows in the same direction.
what do wires usually have a cord of and why?
copper as it is very conductive when pure but very malleable.
what colour is the neutral wire and what does it do?
blue- completes the circuit and carries away current, electricity usually flows out through here. It’s around 0 volts
What colour is the live wire and what does it do?
Brown, it provides alternating potential difference from the mains supply. 230v
What colour is the earth wire and what does it do?
Greens and yellow, it is for protecting the wiring, and for safety- it stops the appliance becoming live. Also at 0v
What is the frequency of the ac mains supply?
50Hz
What happens if the earth wire is carrying current?
There is a fault
