Forces Flashcards
How can we represent a force in a simple situation?
Arrows
What are some common types of contact forces?
Friction, upthrust, tensions, supporting forces
What are some common non-contact forces?
Force of gracity, electric force, magnetic force.
(GEM)
What does friction do?
Friction converts kinetic energy to heat energy which can slow down or stop an object e.g. when there is too much friction on a tire it burns out.
What are some factors that can decrease friction?
Air friction, streamlining, lubrication.
What happens to the weight of an object in water?
Objects feel lighter in water because water produces upthrust (bouyancy)
What metals can magnets affect?
Iron, Cobalt, Nickel.
What is a balanced force?
Balanced forces are forces which are equal in size but oppisite in direction, if the forces on an object are balanced then the object is stationary or travelling at a constant speed.
What happens in a car crash that absorbs the impact force?
Decreases speed and uses technology like airbags to help keep the driver and passengers safe.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in a body measured in kilograms.
Does weight change depending on the force of gravity?
Yes
Does Mass change depending on the force of gravity?
No
What is a black hole?
A black hole is an object with suck a high gravitational field that even light is not fast enough to escape from it.
