Body systems: Circulatory system Flashcards
What is the function of the circulatory system?
The job of the circulatory system is to deliver materials around the body.
What are the upper chambers of the heart called?
The atria (Left and right atrium)
What are the bottom chambers of the heart called?
The ventricles (Left and right ventricle)
What is the main artery taking blood out of the heart?
The aorta
How does blood circulate on the right side of the body?
The right side pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide.
What substances are in blood?
Plasma, White blood cells & platelets, Red blood cells?
What is the effect of exercise on heart rate?
As exercise level increases, the pulse rate increases.
What is the average volume of blood in the human body?
About 5 Litres.
What is the link between respiration, breathing, digestion and circulation?
- The digestive system breaks down food and gets it into the blood.
- The breathing system adds oxygen to the blood
- The circulatory system delivers this digested food and oxygen to the cells which need it for respiration. It also takes the carbon dioxide produced by respiration back to the lungs to be breathed out.
What is respiration?
The action of breathing.
