Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
Push or pull
What is a force also known as?
Also known as weight, gravitational force, gravity and pull of the earth
What can a force do?
Start movement, stop movement, change direction, change shape and change speed
When you sit on a chair, what force is acting downwards and what force is acting upwards?
Downwards: weight
Upwards: normal force
When you are on a boat, what force is acting upwards and what force is acting downwards?
Downwards: weight
Upwards: upthrust
When you are on a parachute, what force is acting upwards and what force is acting downwards?
Downwards: weight
Upwards: air resistance
Why does weight act downwards?
Weight acts downwards on ground due to gravity
What is a balanced force?
Balanced force is force in which object does not move and is said to be stationary
Which balanced forces will act upon a moving object at constant speed?
Weight, normal force and weight of the object
Which two unbalanced forces act upon an object moving at constant speed?
Air resistance and driving force
What is the second pedal on the kart called?
Brake
What happens if the boat has a hole?
It will start to sink because the boat will get heavier and water will start to enter the boat, meaning that the upthrust force cannot be balanced and then the boat will start sinking
What is a lever and what is it composed of?
Device that changes direction in which force acts is called lever, composed of 2 arms and fulcrum/pivot
What does a lever act as?
Force multiplier
What is the definition of a force multiplier?
Force multiplier means that small force applied to one arm of lever can cause large force to be exerted by the other arm of lever
What is the effort?
Force applied to lever to do work is called effort
What is the load?
Opposes force that is resisting movement
What is the moment?
Turning effect produced by force around fulcrum
What is the formula to find the moment of the force?
Moment of force = force x distance from pivot
How many grams is 1N?
100g
How many N is 100 grams?
1N
How many grams is 10N?
1000g
How many newtons is 1000g?
10N
Which unit is the moment measured in?
Moment is measured in newton metres (Nm)
