Acids and alkalis Flashcards
All solutions in water are what?
Acids, alkaline, or neutral
Which is a good indicator to tell acids and alkalis apart?
Litmus is a good indicator which turns red in acidic solution and blue in alkaline solution
What is the pH scale?
pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is, runs from 0-14 and above
On the pH scale, which numbers are acids, alkalis and neutral?
0-6 = acids
7 = neutral
8-14 = alkali
What is a universal indicator?
Universal indicator is mixture of indicators that has range of colours depending on pH of solution
Which acids are used in the laboratory?
Acids used in laboratory are: HCL, sulphuric acid, nitric acid
What are some alkalis used in the laboratory?
Alkalis used in laboratory are: sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonia
What is neutralisation?
Neutralisation is a process when the same amount of an acid and alkali is added into a solution, cancelling each other out and neutral solution can be formed
What is titration?
Titration is method to investigate concentration of acidic and alkaline solutions
Give an example of neutralisation.
wasp sting (alkaline) can be neutralised by vinegar (acid)
