Forces Flashcards
Characteristics of Forces
- A push/pull on an object
- Cant be seen (but felt)
- Symbol= F
- Unit= N (newtons)
Effects of forces
- Changes speed of object
- Changes object direction
- Changes objects shape
- Bring object to standstill
What is the function of forces
To change speed/direction/shape
Spring balance
a balance that measures weight by the tension of a spring
Explain force pairs and give examples
When a force is exerted on an object the object exerts an equal responding force in the opposite direction (book pushes down on table; table pushes book)
what is a frictional force(contact force) and some characteristics
When objects rub together
,Stops things gliding past each other
,Produces heat
,Wears surface down
What is applied force(contact & non-contact) + example
Pulling/tension/pushing/compression (pushing aa soccer ball)
What is a normal force
When an object rests on a surface (Always 90° perpendicular to surface)
Forces and pressure rule
The greater the area on which the force is applied, the smaller the pressure
Explain Field Forces (non contact)
All objects with mass exert gravitational force, larger objects exert greater force, as objects move apart forces of attraction weaken
Explain Force Field + give example
Region around object where force is felt (gravity)
Mass to weight formula
w = m x g
What’s the difference between mass and weight
mass is the amount of atoms in a material, while weight is a measure of how the force of gravity acts upon that mass
what is weight measured in
Newtons (N)
what is gravity measured in + on earth
m/s² , 9.8m/s²
describe magnetic force (non-contact)
Can act through other materials
Force weakens as distance increases
explain what ferromagnetic means
Materials that can be magnetized.
explain magnetic poles
Magnetic force stronger at the end of the magnets , Opposite poles attract, Similar poles repel
what is electrostatic force (non-contact) how does it work
When certain objects rub together they become charged
Friction between objects make electrons from one materials atom move to the others
What is polarization + explain
When a positively charged rod is brought near to a neutral object. The positive protons are repelled & negative electrons are attracted = neutral object becomes polarized (has 1 positive & 1 negative)= attraction
