electricity and ohms law Flashcards
What is an electrolyte
A solution that conducts electricity (has positive & negative particles)
What are metal rods
Serving as poles/electrodes (positive pole=anode , negative pole=cathode)
What is potential difference
Work that has been done energy required in transferring charge from one point of the cell to another
What is potential difference measured in + symbol
Volts with a voltmeter (connected in parallel, often high resistance) (V)
potential difference in series
Total voltage is the sum of each cell
potential difference in parallel
Total voltage is equal to one cell’s voltage
what is electricity
An electric current is the rate of flow of charge
what are the requirements for electrons being powered by an energy source
An energy source/battery
Conductors
Closed circuit
what is current measured in
Amperes (A) (I- symbol)
what does an ammeter do
measures current
Connected in series
Offers low resistance
What is a resistor
Components in a circuit allow electrons to pass through in different amounts
what is the symbol and unit for resistance
R, ohms Ω
what are rheostats
variable resistors – can change the current strength by controlling amount of resistance
(dimmer switch)
what are the factors effecting resistance
- Material length, longer materials = greater resistance
- Cross sectional area of material larger areas = less resistance
- Temp of material, higher temp = higher resistance
- Type of material,
calculating total resistance in a series
R = R₁ + R₂
