force and motion Flashcards
what is force defined as?
An object moving at constant velocity moves at the same speed without changing its direction of motion.
what is a force described as in general terms?
“To Push or Pull an Object” is defined as the force.
what can a force cause an item to do?
move from rest to motion and vice versa, change its speed or change shape
what is the dimensional formula of force?
MLT²
what are the effects of forces?
- Force can Change the Shape and Size of an Object
- Force can Change the direction of an Object
- Force can Change the Speed of an Object
- Force can change the state of Rest or Motion of an Object
what happens to equal and opposing forces ?
cancel out which means the resultant force is zero
examples of contact forces?
muscular forces and friction forces
examples of non contact forces?
gravitational forces, electromagnetic forces and electrostatic forces
what are non contact forces?
Non-contact forces are those that may act without coming into touch with an item.
what are contact forces?
The forces which are applied to other objects only through physical touching are called contact forces.
what are muscular forces?
- Muscular force is a contact force in which force is exerted by the muscles of the body.
- For example, jumping, kicking, running, walking
what is the frictional force?
Frictional Force is a contact force that always opposes the body’s state of motion over another body
what is the magnetic force?
Magnetic force is a non-contact force exerted by a magnet on any other magnetic substance
what is the electrostatic force?
An electrostatic force is a non-contact force that can be exerted by a charged object on another object from a distance
what is gravitational force?
The Gravitational force is a non-contact force between two bodies having some mass. It is an attractive force
what is the line of action of a force?
The line of action of a force is the path it takes as it exerts its force on an object.
what is newtons first law of motion?
A body in the state of rest stays at rest(stationary) and a body in the state of uniform motion(constant velocity) stays at uniform motion until and unless a net external force is applied
what is the law of inertia?
The natural tendency of an object to resist a change in its state of rest or in its state of uniform motion is called Inertia.
It is the fundamental property of any object.
