What are the WHO definitions of disability and give explanations for each?
Body & structure impairement - abnormalities of organ or system
Activity limitation - Changed functional performance and activity by the individual
Participation restrictions - disadvantages experienced at a social level as a result of the disability
Give examples of how these definitions could apply to patients lifes?
- Damage to a body structure e.g. brain
- Limitations in mobility
- Learning difficulties
- Exclusion from certain activities, e.g. riding a bike, playing sports
What implications can disability have for the following groups of people?

Parents:
1) Unable to balance work and caring for disabled child
2) Caring for the child may be detrimental to parents health
Siblings:
1) Resentment at the time parent spend caring for disabled child
2) They may have to care for their brother/sister if parents are unable to
Peers:
- Friends of the disabled child may be stigmatised along with the disabled child themselves
- May need to adapt their activities to include their disabled friend
Teachers:
May have a lack of understanding or training into how to care for a child with disability
Difficulties in managing time spent with disabled child and non-disabled children
What is meant by the term expert patient?
- A patient who has extensive knowledge and understanding of their condition
- The knowledge of an expert patient can be used to significantly improve their health outcomes and quality of life
- The knowledge of expert patients has historically been under utilised until recently

What is meant by a confounding factor and give 2 examples of common confounding factors?
A confounding factor is one which is associated independently with both the disease and with the exposure under investigation and so distorts the relationship between the exposure and disease
