Food Webs/ Chains And Animals Flashcards
Tertiary consumer:
An animal (top consumer) that eats secondary consumers
Herbivore:
Animals that almost eats only plants
Producer:
Usually plants. Start off the food chain.
They are organism capable of making their own food by photosynthesis e.g. green plants, seaweeds and plankton. Energy is then stored in the chemical bonds of glucose and starch.
Secondary consumer:
An animal that eats primary consumers e.g. carnivores and scavengers
Omnivore:
Eats both animals and plants
Carnivore:
Eats almost only animals
Primary consumer:
An animal that eats producers e.g. herbivores, decomposers, detritius feeders
E.g of carnivore
Common seal
E.g of herbivore
Grey mullet
E.g of producer
Bladderwrack
E.g of primary consumer
Flat winkle
E.g of secondary consumer
Crab
E.g of tertiary consumer
Herring gull
What do the arrows in a food chain represent?
Is eaten by
Top consumer:
The last animal in a food chain
Prey:
And animal that is caught and eaten by another animal
Nocturnal animals:
Creatures that are active at night
Predator:
An animal that catches and eats other animals
Food chain:
A way of showing what eats what in a habitat.
It begins with a plant and shows how food/ energy is passed through series of organisms in a community
Food web:
Many food chains linked together.
This is a chart showing all the feeding connections in the habitat/ environment.
Constructed by showing the links between all the interconnecting food chains in the habitat.
Chemical energy:
A stored form of energy found in food
What is the primary source of energy on our planet?
The sun
What are consumers?
Consumers are organisms that feed on the other organisms. They cannot make their own food. There are 3 types.
What are primary producers?
They are the first members of the food chain
E.g. of decomposers:
Worm, bacteria, mushroom and instect
When does a food chain end?
It ends when there’s not enough energy to support another organism
E.g. of food chain:
Grass (gives food to) = Rabbit (gives food to) = Fox
What is a grazing food chain?
A grazing food chain is one where the initial plant is living
E.g. of grazing food:
Grass = grasshoppers = frogs = hawks
Energy _____ or transfer through an ____ is achieved by ______.
Flow, ecosystem, feeding
