Biodiversity Flashcards
Flora:
The plant life occurring in a particular region or time
Fauna:
All the animal life in any particular region or time
What is important for our futures?
Sustainability
What does our natural world provide?
Crops to feed livestock and ourselves
Bees/ insects to pollinate flowers for sexual reproduction
Plants to provide oxygen and food to eat
Areas for leisure (climbing, walking, cycling)
Medicines
Conservation:
To sustain something and help keep it going as long as possible
Recycle:
To use again
4 aspect of global food production:
Land clearing
Agriculture
Hunting
Fishing
Pros of GFP
Monoculture: large amount of food at low cost, crops can be boated with fertiliser
Cons of GFP
Overuse of herbicides and pesticides
Overuse of chemical fertilisers, animals/ land damage crops - reduces the variety of species
Grey area of GFP
Gives nutrients
Plants grow better and give more food
Solutions to GFP
Organic farming
Crop rotation
Organisations offer support
Experiments with new methods of food productions
