Animal Adaptation Flashcards
What is interdependence?
All the organisms in a habitat depend on other organisms for their survival
E.g of plant interdependence
Flowers depend on bees to spread pollen and bees depend on flowers for nectar to make honey
E.g of animal interdependence
Squirrels eat nuts and seeds and then take them to another location so they can grow
What is competition?
Competition takes place when 2 or more organisms require something that is in scarce supply
What do animals compete for?
Aniamls comepte for space, food, water and partners
What do plants compete for?
Water and minerals
Light and space
Adaptations:
The features that plants and animals have to help them live in a particular place
How are polar bears adapted to their environment?
White furs for camouflage and big paws
Layer of fat to keep warm
What physical features have that make that make turtles good at living where they do?
Hard shell to protect from predators
Flippers for swimming
Quick movement
Retract body for defense
What does the doormouse do to survive?
Hibernate
What do birds to to survive?
Migrate
How do caterpillars escape from predators?
Caterpillars have similar colours to plants so they are camouflaged
What to butterflies have that help them get to food?
They have long tubular mouth part so they can get the nectar from flowers
What do primroses do to adapt?
Grow and produce flowers in early spring to allow them to get more light before the other flowers in their habitat
How have grasses adapted?
Grasses grow dramatically the base (most plants grow from the tips) meaning grasses survive when eaten by an animal
