a raw material is an unprocessed natural substance or mineral used in a manufacturing process for providing finished goods. a commodity is any product which is low value added and thus very sensitive to price competition
farm to consumer processes
the processes include production, processing, distribution, consumption and disposal
primary food production - processing and manufacturing sectors
primary processing involves cutting, cleaning, packaging, storage and refrigeration of raw foods to ensure that they are not spoilt before they reach the consumer
packaging and retail
food packaging is defined as enclosing food to protect it from tampering or contamination from physical, chemical and biological sources, with active packaging being the most common packaging system used for preserving food products
recycling food
essentially it is the process of turning discarded food produce into a useful product such as fertiliser or biofuel
