Food Science and Commodities Flashcards
What is the importance of Food Science?
So we can continue to feed a growing population
What food security problems could we encounter?
Drought
Land Degradation
Disease (Potato famine)
Climate Change
Why is it a Science?
Food is based on complex chemistry, structure and composition
What is the importance of Food Safety?
We need to ensure the consumer will be safe from falling ill from contaminants.
What does Food and Health have in common?
Food is being promoted as a more natural way to resolve and relieve symptoms of non-communicable diseases.
Why should we be concerned with its economic value?
Australia is a large exporter of foods and much of our economy relies on our ability to produce sufficient quantities of food.
What does Food science have to do with waste?
Consumers in developed countries tend to waste large portions of food, food science is a vector to mitigate this waste.
Why is Food Science a broad field?
Because it is interdisciplinary - it cooperates with other fields such as chemistry, biology and engineering.
What is a Food Commodity?
It is a food material that is derived from primary production.
What are the pertinent food commodities in Australia?
Legumes, Nuts, Oil Crops, Sugar Crops, Roots/Tubers, Meat-Fish-Eggs, Dairy, Fruit-Veges and Grains
