food kq1 variations in food consumption Flashcards
disposable income (E)
DI increasing globally since 1950s = higher Di = higher purchasing power = people can afford more staples/non-staples = consume more food in terms of calories in diet/include more non-staples
how does pricing affect DCs (E)
rising food prices = unable to afford same diet = most have sufficient DI = have purchasing power to afford same amt of calories = may reduce proportion of non staples in diet/change to cheaper, poorer quality staples and non-staples
how does pricing affect LDCs (E)
rising food prices = unable to afford same diet = LDCs have less DI = less purchasing power = cannot afford same amount of calories = only afford to consume less food (less calories consumed)/replace nonstaples with cheaper staples
food preferences (SC)
increasing concerns for health in DCs –> organic food believed to be more nutritious and healthier than food from conventional farms = more people in DCs would prefer organic food and include in diet
globalisation (SC)
fast food chains from DCs able to expand to LDCs due to globalisation = fast food is cheap, easily afforded by LDCs = increase intake of fast food = more unhealthy processed food in diet of LDCs
population growth (SC)
since 1960s LDCs have higher population growth than DCs = demand for food in LDCs grow more rapidly = if supply cannot meet demand, food consumption drops
stability of food supply in DCs(P)
Stable food supply is often seen in DCs –> Sufficient money and ways to import food from a variety of countries = Sufficient food for
people to consume
⇩
Food consumption will
remain the same/
people feel safe to
increase food
consumption
(Happens in mostly in
DCs.)
food safety (P)
events such as radiation leak may cause foodborne diseases = people fear that by consuming the contaminated food they may fall sick = change their food preferences until they think food is safe again
stability of food supply in LDCs (P)
Unstable food supply happens often due to political conflict/civil wars that destroy the farms and reduce manpower available to farm/Natural disasters destroying crops
Unstable food supply
⇩
Insufficient food for
people to consume
⇩
Food consumption
will drop
(Happens in mostly in
LDCs.)
