Balanced diet
• A balanced diet is one which contains the right amounts of protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals to satisfy the body’s needs
What does the amount of food we need depend on
• The amount of food you need depends on the energy you use in the day; which depends on your age, gender, body size and activity.
Why does a pregant woman need more protein containing foods than an average adult
Protein will go to the baby and develop muscles in the womb, or in the baby after birth via breastfeeding
Amount of energy obtained from food is measured in
kilojoules (kJ)
The energy provided by diet must be enough to
(i) keep the internal TEMPERATURE of the body constant
ii) keep internal processes working (eg. RESPIRATION
