Biological Molecules Flashcards
Polymer
A long chain made of monomers e.g starch is made up of glucose units
Monomer
Simple unit made of sugar e.g glucose, which can join together to form a polymer, e.g starch
Dimer
Sugar made up of two units, e.g glucose + glucose
Glucose
Most simple sugar, monosaccharide.
Glucose + glucose - disaccharide
Glucose x lots = polysaccharide
Amino acid
Monomers which make up protein.
20 different types.
Essential amino acids need to be consumed.
Polypeptide
Chain of amino acids (coils up to form protein)
Glycerol
Component of lipids joined together with fatty acids
Glycogen
Complex carbohydrates, glucose molecules joined together to form a long branched molecule called GLYCOGEN
Starch
Complex carbohydrate, glucose molecules join to form a long straight molecule
Lipids
One of the 7 food groups
Solid – fats
Liquid – oils
Saturated fat
Found in animals, can block arteries in the heart
Unsaturated fats
Found in plant oils, good for removing saturated fats from arteries (Benecol, Flora Proactive)
