avocados

What is monosaturated fat?
two carbon atoms are joined
together to form one double bond.
What are the benefits of monosaturated fat?
- It increases blood HDL.
- Reduces heart disease risk
What is meant by the term saturated fat? Examples.
Hard/firm fats at room temperature
e.g. meat, sausages, bacon, cheese, cream, butter, pastries, cakes, biscuits, lard
What are the negative of saturated fat?
- The least healthy fats.
- Can raise blood cholesterol.
- Risk of blocked arteries.
- Increases risk of coronary heart disease
What can a high fat intake cause?
High fat intake:
- weight gain
- obesity
- type 2 diabetes
- raised blood pressure
- heart disease
What is cholesterol?
- a waxy substance in the blood
- HDL ‘good’ cholesterol
- LDL ‘not good’ cholesterol
- LDL can block arteries
- body naturally produces

What is meant by the term polyunsaturated fat? Examples.
Liquid fats at room temperature:
- sunflower / corn oils
- whole grains
- walnuts
- flax seeds
- oily fish
What are the benefits of omega 3? Where is it found?
Prevents blood clotting and is good for heart health.
Found in oily fish.
What are the benefits of omega 6? Where is it found?
Lowers blood cholesterol and reduces risk of heart disease.
It can be found in eggs, tofu and seeds.
What is polyunsaturated fat?
Carbon atoms form more than one double bond.
What are the benefits of polyunsaturated fats?
- It increases blood HDL.
- It lowers LDL.
- Good source of Omegas 3 and 6.
- Reduces risk of heart disease
What deficiencies are caused when not enough fat is consumed in the diet?
- fat soluble vitamins deficiencies
- depression
- night blindness
