Q

What happens between 1-4 days after fertilisation?

A
  • cleavage and compaction
  • zygote divides by mitosis

Q

What happens on day 6 and 7 after fertilisation?

A
  • start of implantation
  • blastocyst attaches to endometrial epithelium (6)
  • invasion of endometrial connective tissue (7)

Q

What happens in week 2 after fertilisation?

A
  • complete implantation
  • embryoblast develops into bilaminar disc: epiblast and hypoblast layers
  • maternal blood fills lacunar within trophoblast
  • cavities form: amniotic and yolk sac
  • formation of connecting stalk

Q

What happens in the 3rd week after fertilisation?

A

Gastrulation
- primitive streak appears in epiblast: narrow groove with bulging regions on either side, elevated area around a pit
- epiblast at primitive streak is source of cells for all 3 germ layers

Q

What are the 3 germ layers in the trilaminar embryonic disc?

A
  • ectoderm: brain, spinal cord, PNS, skin (hair and nails), sensory epithelium
  • mesoderm: bone, cartilage, blood cells and vessels, muscle, heart, kidneys
  • endoderm: respiratory tract, digestive tract, liver, pancreas, bladder
