FOI Task F Flashcards
What is Task F?
Elements of Effective Teaching that include Risk Management and Accident Prevention
What are some obstacles to learning during flight instruction?
I) Impatience
P) Physical Discomfort
A) Anxiety
A) Apathy
W) Worry / lack of interest
U) Unfair treatment
What is the demonstration performance training delivery? EDSIE
E) Explanation - Instructor must clearly explain the objectives, based on the students knowledge and experience.
D) Demonstration - Instructor shows students the actions necessary to perform a skill
S) Student Performance - Students “Act and Do” and learn to follow correct procedures
I) Instructor supervision - Instructor observes and coaches the student
E) Evaluation - Instructor judges student performance on competency attained while performing the skill
Explain positive exchange of controls
A 3 step process for giving or taking flight controls to ensure no confusion on who is flying.
When giving the student the controls:
I) “You have the flight controls”
S) “I have the flight controls”
I) “You have the flight controls”
Explain a sterile cockpit
Refraining from non essential activities during critical phases of flight to include taxi, takeoff and landing.
Why would you use distractions while teaching?
Performing secondary tasks increases the risk of inadvertent stalls or spins.
This teaches students to divide their attention between flying and a distraction
Includes asking them to get something out of your bag or talking to them in a maneuver.
What is integrated flight instruction?
Students are taught to perform maneuvers by outside visuals and by reference to instruments
90% Outside - 10% Inside
Make a habit of instrument cross check early on
What does assessment of pilot ability help to determine?
What students learn
How students learn
How well students learn
When is a student ready to solo?
CAAGETAP
*Can they takeoff, fly to an airport, do 3 laps in the pattern AND get back without any help for yourself?
C) Checklist usage
A) Aircraft control
A) Acceptable T/O and LDG
G) Go arounds, especially if they balloon or porpoise
E) EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
T) Traffic pattern etiquette
A) Ability to deal with unexpected challenges/instructions
P) Proper radio comms
What is the decide model?
D) Detect - that a change has occurred
E) Estimate - the need to counter or react
C) Choose - the desired outcome
I) Identify - actions to control the change
D) Do - (perform) the action
E) Evaluate - the success of the action
What are the hazardous attitudes?
Anti-Authority - Don’t tell me (Follow the rules)
Macho - I can do it (Taking chances is foolish)
Impulsivity - do something (Not so fast, think first)
Invulnerability- it won’t happen to me (It could happen to me)
Resignation - what’s the use? (You are not helpless)
What are the principles of risk management? AAIM
A) ACCEPT NO UNNECESSARY RISK
A) Accept risk when benefits outweigh the costs
I) Integrate risk management into planning at all levels
M) Make risk decisions at the appropriate level
What are the levels of risk measured in?
Severity - Extent of possible loss
Probability - likelihood that a hazard will cause a loss
How would you assess risk?
Risk management matrix pg. 34
Likelihood
- Probable
- Occasional
- Remote
- Improbable
Severity
- Catastrophic
- Critical
- Marginal
- Negligible
What is mitigating risk?
Abilities taken to assess and reduce risk
