What is the difference between anxiety and stress?
Anxiety is a feeling of worry about a potential future problem
Stress is a feeling of worry about a current problem
Normal reaction to stress: a student will respond rapidly and exactly within their capabilities
Abnormal reaction to stress: Laughter in an inappropriate event, extreme over cooperation, painstaking self control
What are some common defense mechanisms?
D) Displacement - And unconscious shift of emotion from the original, to a more acceptable, less threatening substitute.
R) Repression - Unconsciously burying uncomfortable thoughts
D) Denial - A refusal to accept external reality
R) Rationalization - Subconscious technique for justifying actions that are not acceptable (making excuses)
F) Fantasy - Daydreaming about how things should be
C) Comparison - Counterbalancing perceived weaknesses by emphasizing strengths in other areas
P) Projection - An individual places their unacceptable impulses onto someone else (placing blame)
R) Reaction Formation - When a person fakes a belief opposite to the true belief because it causes anxiety
What are some barriers to communication ?
C) Confusion - between symbols or symbolized object (ideas)
O) Overuse of abstractions - using words that are general rather than specific
I) Interference - comes from outside forces that an instructor cannot control
L) Lack of common experience - greatest barrier to communication
What are the 3 components to communication?
Sender/Source - the speaker, instructor, writer
Symbol - the idea being conveyed, oral and visual codes
Receiver - student
What are some ways to develop communication skills?
L) Listening - You must want to listen
I) Instructional communication - Using past experiences to make a point
Q) Questioning - Asking open ended questions
I) Instructional Enhancement - An instructor never stops learning
R) Role Playing - Playing as ATC
