FOI (B) The Learning Process Flashcards
What is learning theory?
the body of principle that explain how people acquire skills, knowledge, and attitudes
What is the definition of learning?
a change in behavior as a result of experience
What are the two concepts of how people learn?
Behaviorism: focused on stimulus and response. Stresses the importance of reinforcing desired behaviors
Cognitive Theory: concerned with cognition, with what’s going on inside a students mind
Define perceptions:
these are what result from when a person gives meaning to external stimuli or sensations
They come from our senses, all learning comes from our senses
Define Insights
Grouping perceptions into meaningful wholes
How does a student acquire knowledge?
Memorization, Understanding, Application
What are these Laws of Learning?
be able to briefly explain each
"REEPIR" Readiness Exercise Effect Primacy Intensity Recency
What are the domains of learning?
“CAP”
Cognitive
Affective
Psychomotor
What are the basic levels of learning?
"RUAC" Rote Understanding Application Correlation
What are the Characteristics of Learning?
"PEMA" Purposeful Experience Multifaceted Active Process
What are the three levels of acquiring skill knowledge?
Cognitive
Associative
Automatic Response Stage
What are the types of practice?
Deliberate (working on improving a certain discrepancy)
Blocked (doing the same drill over and over)
Random (practicing separate skills in a random order)
What is scenario based training?
Providing a real world , realistic situation for students to apply what they learned to solve the problem
What are some things a good scenario will have?
Clear objectives
Tailored to the needs of a student
Capitalized on the nuances of the local environment
not a test
will not have a single right answer
is not obvious
engages all three learning domains (cognitive, affective, pyschomotor)
What are the two kinds of errors?
Slip: intended to do the right thing, then inadvertently did the wrong thing
Mistake: intended to do the wrong thing and did it
