What are common presenting symptoms for thyroid disease?
Neck swelling
Neck pain
What should be asked about in a history suggesting hyperthyroidism
- fatigue/poor sleep
- tremor
- problems with sweating
- weight loss, diarrhoea
What should be asked about in a history suggesting hypothyroidism?
Fatigue, mental slowing, depression
Cold intolerance
Weight gain
Constipation
What are common (types of) presenting symptoms associated with pituitary problems
Headache
Visual problems - (think how close the Pituitary and optic chiasm are)
Sexual/Reproductive problems
For a history suggestive of hypopituitarism - what would you ask?
Presenting complaints - Headache, visual problems, repo problems
Ask about:
- Headache (chronic-ish)
- Visual problems - visual impairment, vision loss
- Vomiting
- Altered consciousness
- Hormone specific problems:
- Thyroid - fatigue, weight gain/change, constipation
- Gonadot’s - Sx involving repo stuff
What are the common presenting symptoms for diabetes?
Excessive urine passage (polyuria) - possible nocturia
Thirst
Weight loss
Fatigue
Blurred vision
What questions should you ask in a diabetes HOP?
How often do you need to go to pass urine?
- Have you had any problems with passing urine at night?
Have you noticed you’re often feeling thirsty?
Have you noticed any weight changes?
Have you had any problems with your sight?
How do you feel generally? (fatigue, mood changes)
