Fluids and Electrolytes Flashcards
Fluid volume excess:
Hypervolemia
What is hypervolemia?
Too much fluid in the vascular space
What causes hypervolemia?
- Heart failure
- kidney failure (kidneys aren’t working)
- alka seltzer, fleet enema, IVF w/NA (all 3 have a lot of sodium)
How does heart failure cause hypervolemia?
Heart is weak, CO decreases, decreased kidney perfusion, decrease urine output
Sodium makes the body do what?
retain water
Where is aldosterone found??
Adrenal glands
Normal action of aldosterone:
When blood volume gets low (vomiting, blood loss, etc) aldosterone secretion increases retain NA/water, blood volume goes up
Disease with too much aldosterone:
retain too much sodium and water= fluid volume excess
Cushings and Hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s)
Diseases with too little aldosterone:
loss of sodium and water=fluid volume deficit
Addison’s disease
