Fluids Flashcards
which fluid do you give for fluid volume deficit
Isotonic. NS, Lactated Ringers, and rarely D5W.
what kind of fluid is water
hypotonic
what electrolyte levels decrease in fluid volume excess
sodium
treatment for fluid volume excess
diuretics, fluid restriction, sodium restricted diet, monitor K
have an osmolality close to extracellular fluids. Do not cause RBC to swell or shrink. INdicated for intravascular dehydration
Isotonic solution
Isotonic solutions
NS, Lactated ringers, D5W (some classify as Hypotonic)
have an osmolality lower than extracellular fluid. Causes fluid to move from extracellular to intracellular space.
hypotonic solution
indicated for cellular dehydration
hypotonic solution
hypotonic solutions
0.5% NS, 0.33% NS, 2.5% dextrose in 0.45% saline
Not used for patients with risk of ICP, not commonly seen, for prolonged dehydration and TPN
hypotonic solutions
osmolality higher than extracellular fluid. indicated for intravascular dehydration with interstitial or cellular overhydration
hypertonic solution
use with extreme caution. are used with serum osmolality is dangerously low
hypertonic solution
high concentration of dextrose is given for
caloric replacement (TPN, PPN)
hypertonic solutions
5% dextrose in LR (D5WLR), 5% Dextrose in 0.45% saline (D5 and NS), 5% dextrose in 0.9% saline (D5NS)
treat intravascular dehydration with cellular or interstitial over hydration. Treat post operative dehydration from blood loss. Ascitis. 3rd spacing
