Fluids - 7.1 Grade 8 Flashcards
What is a fluid?
*What 2 types of matter can a fluid be?
A fluid is any substance that flows.
It can be either a gas or a liquid.
List examples of liquid fluids.
*give 5 examples
Sample Answers: honey, blood, lava, engine oil, window cleaner.
List examples of gaseous fluids.
*Give 3 examples
Sample Answers: oxygen, carbon dioxide, helium.
What is a slurry?
*Give an example
A mixture of solids and water. (ex. Paper was once a slurry of wood pulp and water)
What is slurry technology?
The transport of solids in water.
What is hydroseeding and what is it used for?
include what it is a mixture of and who uses it
Hydroseeding is a type of slurry which is a mixture of seeds, fertilizer and sawdust. Farmers use hydroseeding to plant seeds in hard to reach areas.
Fluids have the ability to hold or carry different materials. Give an example.
For example, fluids like toothpaste, hold abrasive particles to help clean the surface of your teeth.
Why were many solid objects prepared as fluids.
- give 2 points
- give an example
Many solid objects were originally prepared as fluids because fluids are easy to move and take the shape of their containers. (ex. A slurry of cement is easy to transport and shape)
How is steel processed into a liquid and why?
fluids in processing materials
Materials such as steel are processed into a liquid by heating it to a high temperature so that the mixture can be melted together. The liquid steel can now be shaped into different shapes and forms and allowed to cool back into a solid.
Give examples of uses for fluids.
*At least 3
Examples of uses of fluids:
- oil is added to the engine of a car to decrease friction, and to reduce noise, heat, and wear.
- paint is applied to iron to create a barrier that prevents rust from forming.
- they can be used to cool machines, like in a refrigerator
- fluid circulating in a radiator can warm a room
- Gaseous fluids can be forced into a smaller volume, like air being pumped into a bicycle tire.
Some mineral ores are converted to liquids in a method called _____ so they can be transported more easily.
*fill in the blank
Froth Flotation
