Fluids Flashcards
1
Q
What are the main causes of edema? (6)
A
- Long periods of standing or sitting. Sitting or standing for too long can cause extra fluid to build up in your feet, ankles, and lower legs. …
- Venous insufficiency
- Chronic (long-term) lung diseases.
- CHF
- Pregnancy
- low levels of protein
2
Q
Functions of the kidney (4)
A
- Regulate fluid and electrolyte balance by adjusting urine volume and the excretion of electrolytes
- If loss of 1 -2 % fluid, kidney reabsorbs more water= concentrated urine
- Remove excess wastes from the body
- Sodium & potassium are also either filtered or reabsorbed
3
Q
Role of ANP (4)
A
- Produced and stored in the atria
- Stops action of RAAS
- Decreases blood pressure by vasodilation
- Reduces fluid volume by increasing secretion of Na+ and water
4
Q
Thirst (3)
A
- Regulated by hypothalamus
- Stimulated by increase in ECF and drying of mucous membranes
- Causes a person to drink fluids
5
Q
Causes of Hypovolemia (8)
A
- Fluid loss
- Fever, excess perspiration
- Hemorrhage
- Vomiting, diarrhea
- GI suction
- Decreased fluid intake
6
Q
Danger sign fluid deficit (7)
A
- restlessness, confusion…..coma
- cold clammy skin
- decreased skin turgor
- weak, rapid heart rate
- rapid respirations
- orthostatic hypotension
- decreased urine output
7
Q
Danger sign fluid excess (7)
A
- headache, confusion
- peripheral edema
- jugular vein distention
- S3 heart sound
- bounding pulse, increased BP
- dyspnea, tachypnea, crackles, pulmonary edema
- weight gain
8
Q
Treatment of hypovolemic shock (5)
A
- fluid replacement NS, LR; blood transfusion; vasopressor
- oxygen therapy
- monitor vital signs and mental status
3.5. insertion of indwelling urinary catheter may be necessary - monitor lung sounds
