Fluid mosaic model B4 Flashcards
1
Q
What does the fluid mosaic model consist of?
A
-Proteins, Glycoproteins, Phospholipds and carbohydrates
2
Q
Why is it called the fluid mosaic model?
A
-The phospholipid molecules form a bilayer that are constantly moving around relative to one another, giving it a fluid structure
-The protein molecules are unevenly distributed throughout the membrane forming a mosaic
-The agreed structure is based on experimental evidence so it’s a model
3
Q
What are intrinsic proteins?
A
The membrane proteins which are embedded completely or partly through the lipid bilayer of the membrane
4
Q
What are extrinsic proteins?
A
Loosely bound proteins located outside the membrane
