Fluid Mechanics Flashcards
What is a drag force
Acts in opposition to motion, caused by the motion of the body travelling through a liquid
Name and define the 2 types of drag
Surface drag-relates to the friction between the surface of an object and the fluid environment
Form drag-relates to the impact of the fluid environment of an object
Name the 3 factors that could affect drag
-Velocity of the moving body
-Cross-sectional area of the moving body
-Shape and surface characteristics of a moving body
Describe the Bernoulli principle on an object like a discus/javevlin
-A discus has an angle of attack tilting upwards.
-This means that the air below the discus has a shorter distance to travel than the air above the discus
-This means that the air below the discus will travel slower than the air above the discus
-This will lead to a higher pressure below the discus than above the discus
-Resulting in an upward lift force.
