Air Resistance and Friction Flashcards
Name and define the 2 types of friction
Static friction-the force exerted on one surface by another when there is no motion between the 2 surfaces
Sliding friction- when there are 2 bodies in contact with one another that may have tendency to slip/slide over each other
Define Friction
When 2 or more bodies are in contact with one another
Factors affecting friction
Temperature of the objects in contact
Higher temp,lower friction
Mass of the objects in contact
Higher mass,higher friction
Define air resistance
A force that acts in the opposite direction to the motion of a body travelling through air
Factors affecting air resistance
-Velocity of the moving body (higher velocity, higher air resistance)
-Cross-sectional area of the moving body (larger cross-sectional area, higher air resistance)
-The shape and surface characteristics of a moving body (more streamlined, less resistance)
