Fluid Dynamics - Definitions Flashcards
Density
Mass per volume
Specific Gravity
Compares the density of one substance with that of another, compared with water at 4°C or air at 20°C
Pascals law
When a pressure is applied to a contained liquid the liquid exerts an equal pressure at right angles to the container that encloses it
Viscosity
The resistance of a fluid to a change in shape or movement (how thick a liquid is)
Fluid resistance
It is the friction between a solid body moving through a liquid or a gas also known as fluid friction
Streamlining
Decreasing the amount of restrictive force of fluid friction
Static pressure
Sum of gravity, applied force and atmospheric pressure
Atmosphere pressure
Density of air dependent on altitude
Ambient pressure
Pressure in the area immediately surrounding the object
Bernoulli’s principle
All matter contains potential/kinetic energy
Fluid pressure
Pressure exerted by a column of liquid is determined by the height of the column and is not affected by volume
Head
The vertical height of the column of liquid whose weight would produce that pressure
