what is thoracentesis?
A
- procedure to remove excess fluid from pleural space
- most easily done from the back where the pleural gutter is deepest and nerovascular bundle is closer to the inferior edge of the rib

- look for adjacent organs that can be mistaken for the collection by u/s during drainage procedure
- focally dialated small bowel loop
- GB
- UB
- distended stomach
- ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus

- INR
- PTT
- PLT

INR- 0.8-1.3
PTT- 150 000- 450 000
PLT- 25-35 sec

drainage procedure management of pain?
A
- typically not an issue
- nonnarcotic medication usually enough to control pain

sepsis from drainage procedure?
A
- operators should not over distent the fluid collection
- rigors only without fever can respond to medication
- fever
sepsis requires fluid resucitation and even vasopressors with ICU asmission

what is medical biochemistry/ chemical pathology/ clinical biochemistry?
A
- concerned with analysis of bodily fluid
- usually check for cell count and different electrolytes, total protein, minerals within fluid
