Fluid Balance Flashcards
Third spacing
accumulation of fluid in a space where there is usually NO fluid. Occurs when there is excess fluid in blood vessels and it moves into the interstitial or “third” space
Ascites
“third-spacing” b/c it is the fluid build up of peritoneum, where there is usually no fluid
Interstitial edema
not third spacing b/c interstitial space always has fluid, but now there is too much
Total body water (TBW)
0.6x body weight
Extracellular fluid (ECF)
1/3 TBW
Intracellular fluid (ICF)
2/3 TBW
Plasma
1/4 ECF
Interstitial fluid
3/4 ECF
Osmosis
Net diffusion of water across a membrane from a region of high water concentration to one that has a lower water concentration
Osmolarity
amount of solute particles in a solution. Defines concentrations of ions in the kidney.
1 mole of solute in 1 liter of solution = 1 osm/L. BUT if a molecule dissolves into 2 ions (like NaCl) a solution with 1 mol/L has an osmolar concentration of 2 osm/L
