Flow definition
A state of optimal experience occurring when our body and mind
are pushed to the limits while working to achieve something
The normal state of brain
Prefrontal cortex that allows conscious
thought/reflection is very active
Flow state of Brain
Prefrontal cortex less active, transient hypofrontality
Characteristics of Flow
- Complete concentration on the task
- Clear rules/goals, immediate feedback
- Transformation of time (speeding up/slowing down)
- Intrinsic motivation
- Perception of effortlessness/control
- Loss of self-consciousness
Autotelic personality
The “flow personality”
Intrinsically motivated to seek challenges and flow states
High curiosity, persistence, grit
Seek satisfaction in all aspects life, more autonomous and successful
Opposed to individuals who are extrinsically motivated
Conscientiousness personality trait
Positive
Diligent, organized, efficient, self-disciplined
Motivated to achieve, master tasks and develop skills
Neuroticism
Prone to anxiety, worry, and self-criticism
Less likely to persevere through difficult situations
Why is flow more likely to occur during our leisure pursuits
Intrinsically motivated
We are more likely to persevere and develop a high level of skill in leisure pursuits
