Informal Deviance
Behavior that violates social norms of behavior
E.g. It is not acceptable to get in a public shouting match
Formal Deviance
Behavior that violates laws (norms that have been codified)
E.g. Rooster fighting is illegal
Structural functionalism
Society is an “organism,” and tends towards stability
Norms and laws form naturally to promote stability
Conflict Theory
Deviance is defined by those with power in society as a
means of maintaining the status quo
Deviance is
contextual, different in times and places
Playful Deviance
When deviant behavior is accepted/encouraged: Mardi Gras
Malum in se
Wrong in itself”
Activities that are inherently wrong, regardless of context.
Malum prohibitum
“Wrong because it is prohibited”
Activities that are formally or informally deviant in a given context
Deviant leisure may be classified according to the locus of harm
- Harm to the individual
- Harm to others
- Non harmful
