Three key characteristics of Leisure
Individuals are highly engaged in a leisure experience
Intrinsically motivated, meaning an end into itself, and not
externally motivated
Freedom from something, or freedom to have/do something
What is the nature of leisure
Subjective: Definition varies from person to person
Neither “good” nor “bad”
Contextual: Definition varies from context to context
Recreation (list of five)
- Voluntary activity
- Restores us mentally and physically
- Provides pleasure or satisfaction
- Dependent on work for meaning
- Provides individual and/or societal benefits
RECREATION AS SOCIALLY REDEEMING
Recreation is intended to make us happier and healthier
Enriches our lives by providing fun/satisfaction
Organized and supported by society to do so
Play definition/ key characteristics
Appears purposeless/childlike
Freely chosen
Fun, has “continuation desire”
Absorbing (losing track of time and self)
Occurs outside the “normal” realm
Improvisational potential
