Flop Raising Flashcards
3 Reasons to raise on the flop
- Deny equity
- Build a pot for value with good hands
- To apply pressure with bluffs and semi bluffs
When are the 3 reasons even more important?
When we are OOP
Example #1 unknown raise BTN 2.25 we call in BB with Ah5s. Flop 872hhh, action?
check because we would have 3bet most suited aces and villain has nut advantage. Villain bets 3bb into 5 ( probably best to assume they are selective cbetting). we want to start raising our flushes right away ie T high flush for protection and apply pressure with nutted flush draws.
We adopt this approach to raising when ? ( 3 reasons)
- The board texture is wetter
- We think villain is betting a more polarised range
- Villain folds a lot to flop raises
What 2 things make flop raising optimal?
- Nut potential
- No SDV
Example #2 ABC reg opens 2bb UTG+1 we call in BB with JTdd, flop AKQssc, we check villain bets large, we raise why?
Villain is most likely betting polarised range so we are facing strong made hands and strong draws. we want to fast play and extract value now vs sets 2 pair flush draws, if we slowplay then we could miss value when board run out scares of villian hands like AJ Qt etc
Example #3 BVB timid nit opens 3x we call with Q9cc. flop T85ssc. cbet we raise
We can continue to exert pressure if called on many run outs. Villain is likely to overfold 1 pair at some point in the hand . our range is unbalanced ie expliotative
