Floors, Walls, Ceiling and Plenum Flashcards
Most expensive finish selected, in maintenance cost alone.
Floors
Most conspicuous architectural elements. Conceals building services like communications, hvac, plumbing.
Walls
Overhead interior surface, covering the upper limits of a room. Not considered a structural element, but a finished surface.
Ceilings
Separate space provided for heating, ventilation, and air- conditioning (HVAC)
Plenum
Flooring that closely resembles elements found in nature. Durable, practical and can last the life of a building
Hard flooring
Flooring that combines comfort underfoot and quietness associated with textile floor coverings, with the imperviousness of hard floorings
Resilient flooring
Type of flooring that uses: Carpet is unmatched among floor coverings for a luxurious feel underfoot
Soft floor covering
Floor that is already waterproof and impervious to most household liquids
Ex: Slate, ceramic, quarry tiles
Nonporous floors
Flooring that is waterproof and resistant but not impervious to oil and grease
Ex: marble, terrazzo, rubber, linoleums, vinyl, asbestos, thermoplastic
Semi- porous
Flooring that is not waterproof or greaseproof and are likely to stain. Should be sealed to be non- porous
Ex: unsealed wood, cork, concrete, chipboard
Porous floors
Natural material made from sand, clay, water with some kind of organic material
Adobe
Block of ceramic material, used in masonry construction
Brick
Tile that has. The lowest absorption level
Impervious
Glasslike, tile that is slightly more absorptive than impervious tile
Vitreous
Tile that has an absorption level of more than 3.0% but not more than 7.0%
Semivitreous
Tile that is most absorptive at a rate more than 7.0%
Non-vitreous
Tile is double fired
Bicottura
Tile is single fired
Monocottura
Type of ceramic tile that is:
After firing, a thin coat of liquified glass is applied over the top surface
Glazed interior tiles
Type of ceramic tile that is:
Usually 6-10mm thick. Sizes are 25x25cm or 50x50cm
Ceramic mosaic tiles
Type of ceramic tile that is:
Suitable for heavy floor service. Made of unglazed porcelain or natural clay
Paver tiles
Type of ceramic tile that is:
Known to be very durable as a flooring material, impervious to moisture, stains, dirt and resistant to abrasions. Made from clay or shale
Quarry tiles
Type of ceramic tile that is:
Fired at high temperature. Generally dense and impervious. Chip resistant and is extremely difficult to cut
Porcelain tiles
Type of ceramic tile that is:
Can be made of any material and is solid throughout
Homogeneous
ceramic tile finish that is:
Composed of the same ingredients and texture throughout
Unglazed tile
ceramic tile finish that is:
Has a glassy surface and is impervious to moisture
2 types is bright and matte
Glazed Tile
Flexible wall covering, laminated to cotton or backed with paper in continuous rolls. Thermal insulation and acoustic. Prone to moisture, stains, easily chips and crumbles in edges
Cork
Oldest wallcovering.
Fabric
Type of fabric wall covering that involves laminating paper to the reverse side of the textile
Paper-backed fabric
Type of fabric wall covering involves stretching the textile in a frame and applying a latex compound
Latex-coated Fabrics
Transparent and translucent material but will likely continue to be windows
Glass
Flooring that is superior and less porous kind of concrete made from cement, granite chipping and granite dust
Granolithic
A material that can be constructed by uniting two or more layers of material together.
Laminates
Type of laminate produced with kraft papers and decorative papers with a layer overlay on top of the decorative paper
Plastic Laminate
Type of laminate that is molded and cured at a pressures not lower than 70kg per sq cm (1000 lbc per sq in)
High- Pressure Laminate
Type of laminate that is molded and cured at pressures in 400lbs per sq in
Low-pressure Laminate
Multi- layered synthetic flooring product fused together with a lamination process. Usually composed of melamine resin and fiberboard materials
Laminated flooring
Composed of oxidized linseed oil or other resins mixed with ground cork or wood flour, mineral filler, and color pigments with a fiber backing
Linoleum
Made from pigment, oil, resins, solvents, plasticizers and additives
Paint
Man made material usually composed of marble dust, bauxite, acrylic or polyester resins. Seamless countertop. Mimics stone, wood, and other natural materials
Solid Surface
One of the basic building materials of man.
Stone
Classes of rocks by the deposition of sediments
Sedimentary
Classes of rocks that have undergone a change in structure, texture or composition such as heat and pressure
Metamorphic
Classes of rocks that are formed by the crystallization of molten magma
Igneous
Loosen, and unfinished stones found on the surface of the soil. For exterior walls in garden and beaches
Fieldstone
Quarried stone of various shape and sizes but is irregular
Rubble stone
Quarried and squared stones cut into specific sizes
Dimension Stone
Hard-durable ,low maintenance stone. Uniform in color and texture. Highly resistant to stains, weathering, and corrosion. A grainy igneous rock
Granite
crystalline and compact varieties of carbonate of lime. A metamorphic rock, white in form but are mostly enriched with impurities giving it special colors and patterns
Marble
A white or blue grey marble
Carrara Marble
Whiter than Calacatta Marble. More dramatic veining and is rarer
Calacatta Marble
A sedimentary rock formed by the accumulation of organic remains such as shells and corals . Mostly used as cladding for buildings
Limestone
Fined grained homogeneous metamorphic rock composed of clay and volcanic ash
Slate
A sedimentary rock, which is deposited from the water of mineral springs . This stone is charaxterized by pitted holes and throughs in its surface
Travertine
A sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand size mineral rock grains. Common building and paving material
Sandstone
Cryptocrystalline form of quartz. White to almost every color. Glows
Onyx
Composite material made of crushed stone bound together by a polymer resin. Factory made in slabs, cut and polished by fabricators and assembled in work site
Engineered stone
93% quartz, 7% polyester resin and pigment. Non porous, practically indestructible and maintenance free. Safe for food handling in the kitchen
Quartz stone surface
Basically a new material. Mimics the process of creating natural stone. Minerals and stone particles are subjected to heat and pressure
Sintered Stone
Marble scraps as floor surfaces for their patio terraces. Embedded the small stone pieces in concrete and polished surface. Low maintenance, seamless look
Terrazzo
Made up of synthetic or natural _____ combined with mineral filler and pigments. Highly resistant to a variety of chemical and solvents. Highly durable and good for high traffic areas
Rubber flooring
Kind of plastic and can be made hard and rigid or soft and spongy. Can be made to withstand heat
Has two types: polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl acetate.
Vinyl
More popular in residential applications.
Planks- widest type
Wood strip- 40-60mm
Parquet- small lengths
Block flooring- parquet that is preassembled
Wood
Thin slices of wood, thinner than 3mm. Used in marquetry
Wood veneer
Bookmatching- alternating pieces of veneer so the face each other
Slipmatching- joined in sequence without flipping a pattern.
Random match- random matched
Diamond match- formed by diamond shaped
Types of wood veneer
Engineered wood product manufactured from wood particles such as wood chips, sawmill shaving or even saw dust. Composite material and is cheaper and denser
Particle Board
Engineered wood product that is formed by breaking down softwood or hardwood residuals into wood fibers, combining with wax and a resin binder. Denser than plywood and is usually used in kitchen
Medium- Density fiberboard (MDF)
A wall pattern product that Intends to create an atmosphere in a room
Wallpaper
Type of Wallpaper that can be described as cheap vinyl. Can be washed or gently scrubbed but not with abrasives.
