Ceramics and Pottery Flashcards
Hard, brittle noncorrosive and nonconductive materials formed by the ionic binding of metal and nonmetal as brick, concrete or natural stone
Ceramic
Made by firing clay or similar materials in a kiln as a brick, tile. And pottery
Ceramic ware
Low fired opaque, non vitreous ceramic ware
Earthenware
High-fired, opaque, vitrified ceramic ware
Stone ware
To make clay body vitreous
Vitrify
Resembling glass in transparency, hardness, brittleness, luster or having low or no porosity. Hard burned - fired at high temperature
Vitreous
Having a moderate water absorption of slightly under 6%. Soft burned- fired at low temperature
Semivitreous
Having a water absorption greater than 7%. Soft burned- fired at low temperature
Nonvitreous
Hard, vitreous, translucent ceramic material consisting of kaolin, feldspar and quarts. Fired at high temperature
Porcelain
Translucent ceramic material , bisque- fired at high temperature. Glaze fire at low temperature
China
Fine white clay used in the manufacture of porcelain and white porcelain cement
Kaolin
A vitreous usually opaque, decorative or protective coating applied by fusion to the surface of metal, glass or pottery
Enamel
An opaque glassy coating bonded to metal by fusing at a high temperature
Porcelain enamel
Thermochemical bond between materials resulting from exposure to temperatures approaching the fusion point of the mixture
Ceramic bond
Fired to harden a clay body
Bisque- fired
