Flooding Flashcards
How does prolonged rainfall contribute to flooding
Long period rain cause soil to become saturated.
Increases run off into rivers
Heavy rainfall
Lot of rainfall, and lot of runoff increases discharge of river = flood
Snowmelt
When ice and snow melts lots of water goes into river which increases discharge
Relief
Steep sided valley makes water each river faster
Increases discharge quickly
Geology
In area of permeable rock more water soaks in so less water goes to river in area of imperable Rock water flows to river more quickly
What’s the two human factors that cause flooding
Deforestation- less tress less water absorbed by them, more water goes to a river
Urbanisation - more imperable material water flows quicker to rock
What are impacts of flooding
Loss of jobs
Buildings damaged
People kill and injured
More serious in Ledcs less money to protect affected as less transport links
What are the 5 ways flooding can be caused by
Prolonged rainfall Snowmelt Heavy rainfall Geology Relief
