Flooding Flashcards
What is a flood?
When water overflows an area that is usually dry.
What are some effects of flooding?
Craps get destroyed
Livestock may drown.
People may drown.
Infrastructure is damaged or destroyed.
What are some physical causes?
Steeper gradient: water flows more quickly downhill as runoff and has no time to infiltrate.
Heavy, continuous precipitation will saturate the ground quickly.
What are some human causes?
Deforestation removes plants that usually soak up excess water, increasing risk of flooding.
What is discharge?
Discharge represents the volume of water that passes a point in a river at a certain time.
What is a flood measured in?
Cubic meters per second.
What are floods represented on?
A graph called a flow hydrograph.
What is a rainfall peak?
The greatest a,punt of rainfall.
What is a discharge peak?
Peak flow of water in the channel.
What is Lag time?
The time interval between the peak rainfall and peak discharge.
What is Time of Rise?
The period for the river to reach peak discharge.
What is Bankfull discharge?
Water overflowing in river banks.
