Flood Hydrographs Flashcards
What is a flood hydrograph used to represent?
The rainfall for the drainage basin and the discharge of the same river on one graph
What are the seven main components of the flood hydrograph?
Discharge
Rising limb
Falling limb
Lag time
Base flow
Storm flow
Bank full discharge
What is discharge?
The volume of water that flows in a river over a certain time period.
What is rising limb?
Discharge increasing
What is falling limb?
Discharge decreasing
What is lag time?
The time between peak rainfall and peak discharge
What is base flow?
The level of groundwater flow
What is storm flow?
Overland flow and through flow
What is bank full discharge?
The maximum capacity of the river and if discharge exceeds this the river will burst its banks and flood
What are the four features of a flashy hydrograph?
Short lag time
Steep rising limb and falling limb
Higher flood risk
High peak discharge
What are the four features of a subdued hydrograph?
Long lag time
Gradual rising and falling limb
Lower flood risk
Low peak discharge
