Flight Controls Flashcards
What does the elevator disconnect do?
Splits the torque tube between ca and fo.
How are the elevators controlled?
Mechanically actuated with pulleys bell cranks cables and rods.
What side are the auto pilot servo and stick pusher connected too?
Captains
Where are the servo and spring tabs located?
Spring tab is inboard
Servo tab is the outboard.
Which way does the servo tab deflect?
Opposite the elevator
When is the spring tab used?
High speeds, moves opposite the elevator.
How is the pitch trim actuated?
Electrically moves the position of the horizontal stabilizer?
What trim switches actuates the trim?
Control wheel and back up on the instrument pedestal.
How many channels are on the horizontal stabilizer control unit?
2 each controlling a separate motor.
What protects from trim runaway?
3 second timer on the pitch trim actuator.
How is the aileron system controlled?
Mechanically controlled and hydraulically actuated
Where is the artificial feel unit located?
On the FO’s side.
Which hydraulic system supplies the ailerons?
Both systems supply both actuators
What happens in the event of complete hydraulic failure?
Ailerons revert to manual controlled.
How is roll trim accomplished?
Electomechanical actuator attached to the artificial feel unit and changes the neutral position of the ailerons.
Where is the roll trim button?
Instrument pedestal.
What prevents roll trim runaway?
3 second timer on the actuator.
How is yaw controlled?
Mechanically controlled and hydraulically actuated rudder.
How are the rudders controlled?
Actuators move the forward rudder. The aft rudder moves by rods connected to the forward rudder. Moves up to 15 degrees.
When are both rudder systems operating?
Below 135kts
Above 135kts rudder system 1 shuts down.
What is rudder hard over protection?
The rudder system automatically shuts off when:
Rudder deflected above 5 degrees
Force above 130lbs to opposite rudder
Both engines above 56% N2
How is yaw trim controlled?
Electomechanical actuator repositions neutral point of the rudder artificial feel unit.
What prevents yaw trim runaway?
3 second timer on the actuator.
How does the electromechanical gust lock work?
Locking pins hold the elevator in position.
What type of flaps does the emb 145 have?
Double slotted fowler flaps
How are the flaps controlled
Electrically powered, through the flap electronic control unit powering flap power and drive unit.
How do the flaps move?
2 motors in the FPDU drive the flexible shaft which drives the flap actuators.
What do flap transmission brakes do?
Prevent the flaps from being over loaded in the event of a jam. They lock the panel.
What do velocity sensors do?
Measure the difference of the rotation of the flexible shafts.
How are the spoilers controlled?
Hydraulically actuated and mechanically controlled. By the spoiler control unit.
What hydraulic system supplies the spoiler?
Hydraulic system 2
When will speed brakes open?
Speed brake lever in open position
Thrust levers below 50 degrees
Flaps 0 or 9 degrees
When are ground spoilers deployed?
Airplane on the ground
Main gear above 25kts
TLA below 30 degrees and 56.4 N2
What are the main components of the stall protection system?
2 angle of attack sensors
2 stick shaker actuators
1 stick pusher actuator
What happens when a stall is sensed?
The stick shaker actuates and the autopilot disengages
When is the stick pusher inhibited?
0.5 g's On the ground Below 200' Above 200kts One channel inoperative
