Flight Controls Flashcards

1
Q

What is the effect of pushing the Pitch Trim Switches

Push (both switches) –

A

in the normal mode in flight, changes the trim reference airspeed
in the normal mode on the ground, moves the stabilizer
in the secondary and direct modes, moves the stabilizer.

Q

The primary flight control system provides flight envelope protection when operating in normal mode. They are :-

A

stall protection

Q

Stall Protection. What does the Amber band represent?

A

Top of amber band is minimum manoeuvre speed. It’s the lowest speed you can trim to.
Bottom of the Amber band is the stall speed.

Q

The green band is calculated using the FMC inputs of CG, gross weight, and takeoff thrust.
In G-STBA - G-STBL, G-YMMR - G-YMMU it is also calculated using the FMC input of :-

A

V1

Q

Only change the flap in a non-normal G/A if

A

the QRH/ECL instructs you to. Eg
In the HYD ECL it doesn’t say move the flaps therefore you don’t, you stay at F20. Whereas in the engine failure ECL (for example) it says use F20 for approach and F5 for the G/A

Q

In the Secondary Flap mode, 0-5 takes ……. mins and

5-20 takes …. min. Therefore initiate Flap 1 with …..no to go.

A

4 min
1 min
40 nm

5 mins at 210kts is just under 20nm, therefore initiate F1 with 40nm to go. Tell ATC you intentions.

Q

Can Alternate Gear be raised again?

A

No, therefore tell ATC your intention. Ask for an early Landing clearance with no other Landings or Departures on the Runway by the time you commence your Approach.

Q

How long does Alternate Gear take to extend?

A

Plan 2 mins/ 6nm before descent from your Platform Altitude if you are not performance limited.
If you are then wait until you are descending.

Q

With Flaps/Slats Control, you will need to move the Flaps/Slats in the

A

Alternate mode.

17
Q

With Flaps/Slats Drive, you will …..be able to move the Flaps/Slats from their current position. You are going nowhere if it happens on retraction.

A

not

18
Q

During what 3 Checklists will you require Alternate Flaps?

A

SLATS/FLAPS CONTROL

AIRSPEED UNRELIABLE

19
Q

Alternate Flap mode is limited to a maximum of Flap

A

20

In fact the checklist will always require a landing at F20

20
Q

Can you Autoland with the Flaps in Alternate mode.

A

Yes if it is only a Slats/Flaps Controls issue. Obviously not if part of the Airspeed Unreliable Checklist.

21
Q

Can you Autoland with a Flaps/Slaps Primary Fail issue

A

Yes.

22
Q

Can you Autoland with Slats/Flaps Drive?

A

No

23
Q

What does FLIGHT CONTROL MODE mean?

A

The flight control system is in the secondary mode.

Amongst other things, Autopilot will be inop and Envelope protection functions are inop

24
Q

The Flaps and Slats have their own

A

Independent system.

So a Slats Drive will not affect the Flaps

25
Q

Aileron trim is…….. when the Autopilot is engaged.

A

inhibited

26
Q

The rudder trim control can be used to command manual rudder trim in all three flight control modes. Two rudder trim speeds are available. Low rate rudder trim is commanded by rotating the control to the detent. High rate rudder trim is commanded by rotating the control……. the detent.
Manual Trim Cancel switch actuation causes manually set rudder trim to move to the zero units position at the high speed trim rate.
The zero position achieved by actuating the switch is not as accurate as manually trimming to zero units. The switch has no effect on rudder trim inputs from TAC.
